Alfred Mosher Butts was born on April 13, 1899 in Poughkeepsie, New York. We celebrate his birthday every year as Scrabble Day—sometimes styled National Scrabble Day—even though he originally called his game “Lexiko” when he created it in 1938, and later changed the name to “Criss Cross Words.” (A subsequent owner came up with the name “Scrabble” in 1948.) So gather your qi, grab a slice of za, and see if you can score 1,782 points with Oxyphenbutazone.
