I have a confession to make: I don’t care for comic books. Quite a few times I’ve tried—really tried—to like them, to develop an appreciation for that particular form of storytelling, but comics just don’t do it for me. To summarize my complaints: too many pictures; too few words. Because that’s how I roll. (I do, however, enjoy watching film or TV adaptations of comics and graphic novels—indeed, my current roster of in-progress TV shows includes Arrow, The Flash, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Jessica Jones, and The Walking Dead, among others.) But this isn’t about me. It’s about you. Perhaps you like comics—or perhaps you’ve never really indulged but are willing to give it a try. I support, endorse, and applaud your efforts, and today is the perfect day to get started. Find a local comic book shop and drop in for a free comic book today. There’s (usually) no obligation, but while you’re there, it would be sporting of you to support a small business and buy something too. And, as long as you’re not me, I’m sure you’ll enjoy every page of your (free or paid) comics.
