Since ancient times, the first of May has been celebrated as May Day in many European countries, a spring festival that involved the gathering of flowers and branches, and dancing around a May tree or Maypole. More recently, May Day has come to be associated with the international workers’ movement, as a day to advocate for labor rights, and to remember the Haymarket Riot that took place in Chicago on May 4, 1886.
