The General Federation of Women’s Clubs first observed National Author’s Day in 1928 as a day to honor American writers, and the United States Department of Commerce officially recognized National Author’s Day on November 1, 1949. It was by sheer coincidence, many decades later, that November 1 became the first day of National Novel Writing Month, which conveniently boosts the number of new authors every year. As an author myself, I am of course delighted to have a day in my honor! If you’re an avid reader, you can celebrate National Author’s Day by writing a note of thanks and encouragement to your favorite author. Fan mail makes our day!
