My third-grade son came home from school yesterday with the exciting news that this year’s school play would be “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” so of course he wants to audition for the role of Charlie. (I think he’d be perfect, too!) My kids, like those of generations before them, are growing up on books like James and the Giant Peach, Fantastic Mr Fox, The BFG, Matilda, and of course Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and its sequel Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator—as well as various movie adaptations. Roald Dahl was born on this date in 1916, so he would have been 102 today (he died in 1990). Roald Dahl Day commemorates his life and work each year.
